Staff Instructions for Processing Brittle Materials in Shelf Prep with LSC stickers

Instructions on processing LSC brittle materials: (Gifts new books, including others)

Step 1: Sort books into two categories:

Category 1 should have books without PV flag
Category 2 should have books with PV flag

Step 2: Sort books in category 1 by spine size following instructions below:

Measure each book with spine using the Preservation template, and if spine does not fit into the smaller slot and is not taller or wider than the template will get process for Shelf Prep workflow. (see below under ++++++++++ for the books that fit the smaller slot)

Step 3: Now test each book in category 1 that is sorted for Shelf Prep workflow using the "Too brittle for binding" test listed below:

Note: If book on truck is in good condition and does not need P-boxing or rebinding, please send to the LSC.

When working with brittle materials, need to do the "Too brittle for Binding" test:

Do the brittle test on the last significant page in the book: fold the upper left corner of page, if it breaks, then it is too brittle for rebind. If does not break then  prepare for *rebind.

Please consult Corrina with any questions about whether the page broke or just folded.

  • If too brittle:
    • Place a PB flag in book
    • Change IPS to PB on Aleph
    • Run call number and affix to spine if possible; if not, affix to front (Use excel spreadsheet and scan in barcodes for labels at same time of change IPS)
    • Place a LSC flag in each book
    • Stamp and *target

*Note: Sometimes these can be too brittle for targeting. If that's the case, then write on flag "too brittle to target" and add your initial.

Step 4: Follow instructions below for Binding Process:

  • * Rebinds: NOT too brittle, yet need binding due to falling apart:
    • Place rebind flag in book
    • Change IPS to RB on Aleph
    • Run label and place on front cover or title page in hardback
    • Place a LSC flag in each book
    • If rebinding, do not have to stamp and Target
    • For any questions on whether to rebind, please consult Corrina

Category 1 Preservation group
Books in category 1 going to Preservation please do the following:

  • Place a PV flag in each book

    • Stamp
    • *Target
    • Place in Preservation covered bin

*Note: Sometimes these can be too brittle for targeting. If that' the case, then write on PV flag "too brittle to target" add your initial.

Need to review all books with Preservation flag separately: (see below for instructions)

LSC stickers BOOKS WITH PRESERVATION FLAG

Category 2: Books with PV flag Process will need to get sorted as follows:

Books in good condition separate from books in bad condition

Books in good condition will need the following:

Check the PV flag to see what is being requested and make sure information is clear as to what is needed.

    • Stamp
    • Target
    • Place in Preservation covered bin

Books in bad condition will need to review the PV flag to see what is needed. If only "Review for repair" is checked, review why and make the decision whether or not item needs to be boxed or need binding.
If need boxing, measure book spine size, by using Preservation template. If book spine size fits into the smaller slot on the Preservation template, will get processed for Preservation/Conservation workflow.

Process as follows:

  • Stamp
  • *Target
  • Place in Preservation bin (if a lot may need to place in covered bin and send to Preservation)

Note: Sometimes these can be too brittle for targeting. If that' the case, then write on PV flag "too brittle to target" add your initial*

If spine fits the workflow for Shelf Prep, do the following:

  • * Rebinds: NOT too brittle, yet need binding due to falling apart:
    • Place RB flag in book
    • Change IPS to RB on Aleph
    • Run label and place on front cover or title page in hardback
    • Place a LSC flag in each book
    • Stamp and Target
    • Keep this group for Corrina to review

Special notes: Use plastic bags for paperbacks to keep book together that's falling apart; and use plastic bags and/or string to keep hardback books together that's falling apart.

  • No labels
