Info Requirements From Serials Catalogers for Commercial Binding

Notes:

  • Shelf Preparation Section (SPS) staff do not work in Aleph very often, most of their work is in the Able database.

  • There are 2 broad types of serials moving through SPS

    • Serials with a bindery pattern

    • Serials without a bindery pattern

  • Volumes going to the LSC do not need call numbers written inside. However, when volumes are returned from the LSC for binding, SPS will print a label, but may need Serials Catalogers input for title indication, etc.

Directions:

For Serials with a bindery pattern:

  • Write bindery number in pieces as usual.
  • To indicate enumeration, print out Item Record for piece/binding unit and put inside

  • No need to tick titles or write other info in pieces

For Serials without a bindery pattern:

  • To indicate enumeration

    • Print out Item Record for piece/binding unit and put inside

  • To indicate the title

    • If the Title on the print out is what should be on the spine (main entry is in 130 or 245), then nothing else is required

    • If the Main Entry is in a 100, 110, or 111 field, then tick the information on the piece to indicate what should be on the spine of the bound volume. Alternately, indicate this information on a print out.
