This AI-n’t So Bad: Using AI Tools in Software Development Sean Aery Modern software development requires developers to be constantly learning and adapting to new technologies. Generative AI is relatively new, but it is already having a profound impact on the work that developers do. In this talk, Sean discusses how over the past year, AI tools like ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot have become essential utilities in my everyday toolkit. He demonstrates real-world examples of how these tools have helped to understand, write, troubleshoot, fix, test, and document code. He also reflects on areas where these tools fall short. | Slides
Addressing the AI Elephant in the Room: Incorporating Generative AI into Library Teaching Hannah Rozear From research consultations to first-year writing classes, generative AI tools have led to lively discussions in library instruction. In this talk, Hannah shares her journey of self-learning with generative AI and ideas for talking to students about the benefits and drawbacks of using it for information-gathering. | Slides

Designing and documenting a service philosophy for AUXS Angela Zoss The Assessment & User Experience Strategy department expanded in the summer of 2022, bringing together staff doing work across various areas like assessment, user experience research and design, software development, DevOps engineering, and project management. One commonality across all AUXS staff is that we work closely with other library staff members, including providing consultations, partnering on projects, and leading teams and committees. We also all strive to produce a stellar user experience for our patrons. Over the course of about six months last year, AUXS worked together to articulate a new service philosophy, or a statement about what we're trying to achieve and how we go about prioritizing and accomplishing our work. In this presentation, I'll share a bit more about the services AUXS offers to the Duke Libraries community, and I'll go over the basic tenets of our new service philosophy. We hope this offers increased transparency around the work we do and helps us better prioritize work moving forward. | Slides

December 4 | Mirador & IIIF and Alma Brings Electronic Usage Data to Everyone | Warpwire Recording | Mirador & IIIF: Manifesting a Vision for DUL’s Digital Images Sean Aery (he/him/his), Digital Projects Developer, Assessment & User Experience Strategy Dept Over the summer of 2024, a dedicated cross-departmental team completed a transformative project that redefines how researchers interact with DUL’s nearly one million digital images, both within the Duke Digital Repository (DDR) and via external platforms. In support of this project, DUL extended its use of the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF), a set of community-supported open standards for images. The team accomplished two major goals in DDR: 1) built support for IIIF Presentation API “manifests” to represent compound digital objects; and 2) implemented Mirador — a feature-rich open source image viewer based on these manifests. In this presentation, we will explore the UX improvements resulting from the project, summarize our research that guided our implementation choices, and showcase exciting new opportunities for future integrations. Alma Brings Electronic Usage Data to Everyone! Sarah Holsapple, Collection Analysis Librarian Alma is drastically redefining our e-usage ecosystem! It's an exciting time for us, but possibly a little overwhelming. You'll learn the basics of what electronic usage is in Alma, where to find it, and what it means as I walk through a demo of how to find, pin, and use the e-usage dashboards. I would also love to hear how you use, or would like to use, e-usage so that I can continue to improve the dashboards.
