How To Search

Ensure the search is set to the type of records you want to search. Then enter your search terms in the query box for a simple search. This will search for your term across all searchable fields for the specific record type. We will expand this documentation at a later date to address field-specific advanced searches.

You can also use search to see all records you have access to, public and private! Just leave the query box empty and hit "Go," and your search results will include all record types you can access. For physical objects and organizations, this actually includes all records in the database, since these records are public by default.

Once you have completed a search, you can further narrow down your results by using a “facet.” Facets are listed on the left-hand side of the search (or beneath the search results on mobile). Each record type has a different set of facets available. You can use multiple facets to narrow your search along multiple axes. Facets represent a powerful tool for drilling down large numbers of search results to find the results of interest to you. And you can use facets as an alternate way to browse the site, by using a blank query as described in the previous paragraph. See below for the list of facets by record type.
