Can I control how media are previewed?

Like Permissions enforcement mode, the Media preview mode field can also only be changed by site admins on request. In general, media contributors can select whether to display either a 3D interactive preview (this is the default) or a 2D thumbnail for uploaded media. These 3D media previews are surprisingly important, as often the only way that a potential downloading user can fully evaluate whether the media is suitable for their needs is by checking the interactive 3D preview. We have made allowance for optionally restricting previews to 2D thumbnails to support cases where cultural sensitives may apply to media (e.g., certain bioarchaeological samples). The initial organization permissions default for this field is "No preference" - in other words, contributors can select either 3D previews or 2D thumbnails. Organizational management teams can opt to recommend or require that either 3D previews or 2D thumbnails be used for all media representing organization physical objects. We will only allow organizations to recommend or require 2D previews in cases where cultural sensitivities can be demonstrated across a collection. Organizations should contact us at morphosource@duke.edu to request that this field be changed.
