Barcodes on Discs and Video Materials

Video tapes

Tapes with hard cases or cardboard boxes: Barcode should be on the cassette itself, anywhere along the lower part

Boxed sets: Use piggyback barcodes on the box or on the cassettes.

Discs (all sorts) (CD, CD-ROM, DVD, E-Media, etc.)

Video discs in a case: Barcode goes on the inside of the container, on the same side as the disc, at the top. The barcode should be visible when you open the case.

CD's (all types)

For anything that comes in a jewel case, use piggyback barcodes and place them on the back of the accompanying material, usually on the upper right, but take care not to cover up text or numbers. If there is accompanying material, put the barcode on the accompanying material, on the upper right of the back. The barcode should be visible when you open the case.

Single discs in a cardboard case. These are often "trifold," "quadrafold," etc. The basic instruction is to put the barcode at the top of the section to the left of the disc. If there is a lot of text, find a space where you won't be covering anything up, even if you have to put the barcode in a different place. The barcode should be visible when you open the case. Use a piggyback barcode if you aren't sure.

Single discs in a cardboard case with accompanying booklet (i.e., the booklet is in a pocket or flap of some kind). Put the barcode on the pocket or flap that holds the booklet. The barcode should be visible when you open the case.

Multiple discs in a jewel case (usually there are multiple discs and a booklet). The barcode is placed on the outside of the jewel case, on the back, upper right.

Multiple discs in a cardboard slipcase. The discs are usually in a jewel case and the accompanying booklet slides into the slipcase next to the jewel case. Barcode on the cardboard back, upper right.

Multiple discs in a folding cardboard slipcase, the booklet is in the middle section. This is somewhat similar to single discs in a cardboard case, but because of the booklet, put the barcode on the upper right of the left section, not on the center section or booklet. If there isn't enough room to the right of the disc, put it on the bottom. Make sure the barcode is visible when the container is opened.

Tall, skinny cases with disc(s) inside. Barcode as if they were books. Generally these are shelved in a separate place, not in the CD cabinets. The barcode should be placed as if it were a book (i.e., upside down at the bottom, or wherever the standard place is for books)

Boxed sets that appear to be "LP's" at first glance, but are actually CD's in a box, often with accompanying material that looks like the jackets of the old LP's. Barcode should be placed on the back of the box, as if it were a book.

Sound Cassettes
Single cassettes: place the barcode on the case, on the inside.

Double cassettes that are "opened" like a book: place the barcode on the section between the two cassettes.
