Archive PHI

At IU, the Scholarly Data Archive (SDA) is the primary system for archiving research data. Additionally, the SDA is approved for use with PHI. When archiving PHI, keep the "minimum necessary" standard in mind. This means that you should archive the minimum amount of PHI for the minimum amount of time necessary to perform your research, and data should only be stored for purposes that have been approved by the IRB for your research project.

Prerequisites

  1. Secure your own environment.
  2. An SDA account. If you are archiving data that multiple people will need to access, follow the instructions to have an SDA account created for your IU group account. However, keep in mind that the group account will be the owner of the files, but should not be used to access the archived data. You can work with the SDA admins to get the necessary individuals access to the data via their own IU accounts.

Directions

  1. Aggregate (zip) the data into large files (~ 1 GB)
  2. Encrypt the data using file level encryption. See the instructions for file level encryption in this recipe.
  3. Transfer your files to the SDA.
