Back up my data to the cloud

Cloud storage provides a convenient, affordable, and secure way to back up data provided some basic guidelines are followed.

Prerequisites

  1. Secure your own environment.

Directions

  1. Determine your needs
    1. Size: How much information are you storing in total? How big are the individual files?
    2. Frequency: How often do you need to access this information?
    3. Budget: How much money is allocated to backing up your data?
      1. Storage is often free up to a certain limit and when not free, typically inexpensive. Most storage services provided by IU offer minimum storage limits of over a terabyte.
  2. Consider the options
    1. Services provided by IU
      1. IU offers various storage solutions with functionality to suit different workflows. One popular option is Secure Storage at IU, which utilizes Microsoft Teams. You can find more info about storage solutions at IU here.
    2. Third party backup services
      1. These companies provide dedicated backup services. Examples include Carbonite, Crashplan, and Backblaze.  You simply install their software on the device to be backed up, configure backups, and you're done.
    3. Third party cloud services
      1. These provide backup services as part of their general suite of services, e.g. Amazon, Microsoft, Google.  Examples include Amazon S3/Glacier, Azure backup, and Google Cloud Storage.
  3. Email Cloud Technology Support for help
  4. Visit Get Help with AWS and Azure KB page for support options.
