Process FERPA data for research

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects student information and sets guidelines for institutions such as Indiana University in their obligations to protect student records, controlling disclosures of records and information, and allowing students to request amendments and corrections to incorrect information.

Directions

  1. To find systems that are authorized for use with FERPA data, try using the Data Sharing and Handling tool. This tool allows you to enter information about the type of data you are needing to handle, and provides a list of authorized systems.
  2. Contact the IU Data Steward for student data for more information about FERPA compliance. Data Steward contact information can be found on the IU Data Management web page.

Email securemyresearch@iu.edu if you have other questions about cybersecurity or if you need assistance designing FERPA compliant workflows for your research project.
