Duke University Greening Initiative (DUGI)

The DUGI transportation committee, made up of Nicholas School graduate students Maya Alunkal , Kat Fraser, Tripp Hyde, and Stephanie Roe, is working on several initiatives directed toward making Duke a more bike-friendly campus. The first initiative involves identifying problem areas on campus through our own research and experiences, and then through a school-wide survey. The survey will also help us to identify how many people are currently commuting to and around campus by bike and also how many people would be interested in biking more if it were safer. Our second initiative involves making a recommendation to Duke's Architecture Office for the creation of a master bike plan. Many of Duke's peer institutions have specific bike and pedestrian plans that aim to make these greener transportation methods both safer and more widely utilized. Finally, we are organizing a bike and pedestrian parade for Duke's Earth Day celebration on April 22nd. The parade will help raise bicycle awareness around campus and will hopefully spark the beginning of a Duke bicycle community.

GPSC Green Team

The GPSC Green Team has two projects relating to transportation inititatives.

1. Bus Signage Improvements - The GPSC Green Team has proposed several uniform improvements to the information provided at campus bus stops to a group of administrators including staff in the Parking and Transportation office,  the University Architect's office, and the sustainability office. Currently, a price and design schedule are being compiled along with a complete survey of the existing infrastructure.

2. Bikes - The GPSC Green Team has a group of students who are interested in working to improve the infrastructure, culture and accessibility of biking as a transportation alternative on campus. The exact activities of this group are still under consideration.
