In the 853, the lack of caption is indicated by the use of (*) in the ǂa subfield.  

For instance:  

 In the 866, no caption is provided 

• In the item record, a caption is provided in brackets to designate it is not on the piece. This is primarily so the call number label is not confusing to patrons.
