Advanced Search: Phrases and Entire-Word Matches
Search results only match based on entire or whole terms. It is currently not possible to search via partial-term matching.
It is possible to treat a phrase or multiple words as a single term by enclosing the terms with single-quotes. So, the search “ ‘gorilla skull’ “ will only return matches that have the full phrase ‘gorilla skull’ somewhere in a field.
However, multiple-word terms can behave unpredictably when trying to search for 3 or more multiple word terms using an OR operator. For example, the search “ 'Indri indri','Fakegenus fakespecies' “, using a comma as an OR operator, will return all results matching the species Indri indri, even if no results match for Fakegenus fakespecies. But the search “ 'Indri indri','Fakegenus fakespecies','Otherfakegenus otherfakespecies' “ will return no matches at all. For searches like this, there is a better way.
