Preparing the paperback monograph books for ABLE processing: Types of binding regular and *Flex-S
(*Flex-S books are mostly paperback rebinds. See below for description of Flex S)

Note: CJK NT (Chinese; Japanese; and Korean) books are not a part of this sorting for standard CB unless special instructions from CJK Librarian or catalogers. However, they may have a flag to get process as FM (digi-cover) which is done by CB or Colibri which is done in-house PV

Sort the paperback monographs and place on a truck ready for CB.

  • Review books and remove dust jacket and discard.
  • Review books for cover flaps: if nothing is on the flaps then cut them off. However, keep flaps if text/and or pictures.
  • Review book covers and if covers are like cardboard, then place on shelf for Bindery Coordinator to review
  • Review and pull books off that are too brittle and/or cover is too torn for binding and place on shelf for Bindery Coordinator to review
  • Pull book if not at least 1/8" in gutter (the inner margin) and is not single signatures bound and place on binding sorting shelf for Bindery Coordinator to review.
  • If pages are heavy and glossy and book is bound in single signatures, then place on truck for binding
  • Check for books that Preservation can pam bind, that if the spine fits the template; sort as follows:
    • If book isn't single signature and both covers and pages are glossy shining keep for CB
    • If book isn't single signature and the covers are glossy shining keep for CB
    • If book isn't single signature and the covers are NOT glossy shining process for PV
    • If book is single signature, not glossy and fit the template process for PV

Flex-S Description and Non Flex-S Description of same size books. (These are mostly found in with Rebinds paperbacks)

Description of Flex-S books
Flex-S binding is a type of C-Cloth binding that is done for small light weigh books
The size of the book will be: Spine less than 1"; light weight and less than 7 inches in width; inside pages are not glossy even if the cover is glossy. Book should not be damaged.

Description books almost same size books as Flex-S but NOT Flex-S:
Book with spine less than 1'' and same in height; but are NOT Flex-S are books that have glossy covers and the pages inside the book are glossy also, which contribute to the book too heavy for Flex-S. Also if the book is damaged, not bind as flex S; bind as regular monograph.

NOTE: (CB never re-cases single pages, but they do for books in signatures if covers are too thick)
