Set Continuation Titles: Description
These books are a part of a larger group received in the library, with each being incomplete in a way that the first page of the second book can start with page 321 without a title page and the last page with an incomplete sentence. In fact there is no title page in any of the books in between the group. The book first page picks up the sentence of where the previous book left off.
Therefore, there is a waiting period until the set is complete before binding. Also if the makeup is like a dictionary, then the first book will start with "A" heading at top of page and the last book should end with "Z" at top of page before binding.
Most of them set info looks like Band and Lieferung= Bd. Lfg.
Example of call number: (see bib record 154005) it has a note showing that the "binders supplied by publisher--that is the cover to bind the books in.

Information about processing set continuations in the Perkins Library System
Books like dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc. are understood to be set continuations or standing order sets. Set continuations are received in the acquisition department. Staff opens the shipment and the added volume cataloger process the information on Aleph.
When we receive these, the process is as follows:
Set continuations are monographic sets with more than one issue being bound together: Periodicals/Standard and monograph custom-carbs on the ABLE web, which is the bindery database. Also there are regular monograph sets when a decision is made to bind volumes together [i.e., v.1 and v.2 bind into one binding unit]. These are considered Periodicals/Standard on the ABLE database.
Upon receiving regular monograph sets to be bound together, need to change IPS to IB and place on designated shelves for set continuations. Make sure Aleph item record is appropriately edited to reflect one binding unit.
When set continuations get to Shelf Prep for processing, they could or could not be complete. The incomplete set continuations are place on the monograph new title shelves. They get processed as a regular item-- with call number, stamped and targeted--and sent to various stacks.
Completed items get placed on shelves designated for set continuations ready to be bound by added volume cataloger. These get processed in Shelf Prep by adding to Lot on ABLE web for sending to CB for binding. The instructions document is under ABLE binding folder on SharePoint named ABLE set continuations Instructions.Â
Shelf Prep staff will follow these explicit instructions and add items to the appropriate Lot on the ABLE web database in preparation of binding these items.
Note: There times when each Lfg. get bound separately, but these are rare occasion. In any case, that decision is not made by Shelf Prep staff.
