Brittle Materials Process in Shelf Prep for NTs

Instructions on processing brittle materials of new titles from the wall

When working with brittle materials, need to do the "Too brittle for Binding" test: Do the brittle test on the last significant page in the book: fold the upper left corner of page, if it breaks, then too brittle for rebind. If it does not break, then needs to be prepared for rebind. Please consult with the Bindery and Monograph Maintenance Associate if there are any questions about whether the page broke or just folded.

Note: Review all books with Preservation flag separately: (see below for this group)

Sort by size by reviewing book to see if need to be "In-house boxing" or "Outside Vendor boxing" (use Preservation Template to decide)

Special notes: Use plastic bags for paperbacks and hardback books that are falling apart.

Kase-boxing Process for "Outside Vendor boxing":

  • Run labels and label each book
  • Stamp
  • *Target
  • Change IPS to PB in Aleph for boxing
  • Place on the KASEBoxing shelves or give to the Bindery and Monograph Maintenance Associate

*Note: Sometimes these can be too brittle for targeting. If that is the case, write on the flag "too brittle to target" and add your name.

Kase-boxing Process for sending to Preservation: Only to PV if item fits template

  • Brittle Books In-house to Preservation:
    • Stamp
    • *Target
    • Mark on Preservation flag: "Box"
    • Change the IPS to PV for Preservation
    • Once completed, place books in "closed" lid bin, place bin in S&R labeled with "Preservation" sign to be delivered

*Note: Sometimes these can be too brittle for targeting. If that is the case, write on the PV flag "too brittle to target" and add your name.

Paperback for Binding:

  • Run labels and label each book on the front
  • Books are now ready to process in ABLE on a monograph LOT (add to paperback monograph truck already labeled)

Hardback for Rebinding: (Please refer to "Rebinds Processed for entering into ABLE" document)
